When Should Water Purifier Filters Be Replaced?

One thing whose importance became even clearer during the pandemic is cleanliness. We often even rinse groceries in cardboard packaging before putting them in the fridge. We naturally clean fruit and vegetables thoroughly, wash our hands frequently and perhaps pay more attention than ever to hygiene at home.

We cannot overlook the quality of the water we drink during this period, either. We know how important it is to drink plenty of water for our health. Quality water is also the key to making good coffee or brewing good tea. Cleaning and maintaining our water purifier is therefore a process we must not neglect if we want to use it confidently for years.

What does a water purifier filter do?

Substances such as chlorine and limescale affect—and can spoil—the taste of our food and drinks. Filters in water purifiers remove substances that are harmful to health, separating out potentially harmful constituents of tap water such as viruses, bacteria, limescale and chlorine. Filters are therefore the main components that allow your purifier to perform its essential function.

Water filters block foreign substances, giving you direct access to purified drinking water. However, filters have a service life and must be replaced when it ends. Using expired filters affects the appliance’s efficiency and fails to remove harmful elements from tap water completely. Do not neglect filter replacements if you want to keep your water purifier clean and use it correctly.

How can we tell when it is time to replace the filters in our A. O. Smith water purifiers?

How often should water purifier filters be replaced?

Although this varies with water quality and usage, average recommendations are to replace the system’s pre-filters twice a year, the final filter once a year and the membrane approximately every 2–3 years.

We can check the appliance’s digital displays to see when replacement is due. A. O. Smith water purifiers provide visual and audible information about filter cartridge and membrane life through their digital display or electronic faucet. By checking this information, we can replace the filters when needed.
